SPANISH FORT HISTORY
Spanish Fort was originally a French trading post. The Spanish built a fort at what is now the modern day city of Spanish Fort in 1780. After the British attacked and destroyed the fort in 1781, the Spanish rebuilt and occupied it until it was taken by the United States in 1814.
Spanish Fort was heavily fortified during the American Civil War as an eastern defense for the city of Mobile, which remained in Confederate hands even after the Union victory in the battle of Mobile Bay. The fall of Spanish Fort and Fort Blakeley to the north eventually allowed Union forces to enter Mobile after the end of the Civil War.
